LinkedIn Profile Photo Requirements: What Is Documented, and What Is Not

Career guides tell people to add a professional photo. Very few say what the platform then does to the file, and the numbers involved are not obvious. This page sets out what LinkedIn's own developer documentation states, what no retrievable source states, and 2 measurements anyone can reproduce with a calculator.

What the platform does to the file after you upload it

Microsoft publishes LinkedIn's developer documentation, and for this page it was the only source on the subject that could be retrieved and read directly. 3 things in it bear on a profile photo.

A format list and a pixel ceiling

The Images API accepts JPG, GIF and PNG, and takes images with fewer than 36,152,320 pixels. That ceiling is high enough that it is never the binding constraint on a profile photo.

The stored copy is square

The profile picture reference gives an aspect ratio of 1.00:1.00 and a media type of image/jpeg.

DocumentedThe square ratio is stated. That an off-square upload is cropped rather than padded is an inference from that ratio, not a sentence in the document.

What gets served is a downscaled copy, not your file

The artifact class named in the documentation is profile-displayphoto-shrink_100_100, delivered from media.licdn.com at 100 by 100 pixels. The operative word in that string is shrink. Take a 3024 by 3024 square crop down to 100 by 100 and you have thrown away 914 pixels for every 1 that survives.

Documented1 artifact class is named. Whether larger variants are also generated is not stated in the documentation that could be retrieved, so no larger size is claimed here.

At 100 by 100, a face filling 40 percent of the frame height is 40 pixels tall. A tie pattern, a lanyard, a logo on a shirt, the title on a book behind you: none of it survives at that scale. Detail is not what the small copy carries. What it carries is shape, and where the eyes sit.

The crop that removes a fifth of the frame

A circle drawn inside a square covers pi divided by 4 of the square's area. That is 78.54 percent. The rest sits in the 4 corners and is never displayed.

2 things follow. Anything you put in a corner of the frame is not part of the photo as other people see it. The usable width also varies. It is widest across the vertical middle of the circle and narrows toward the top and bottom. A head placed high in the square loses its sides once the mask lands.

Whether LinkedIn currently uses a circular mask could not be checked for this page. Its help pages and policy pages both return a robots exclusion to automated retrieval, so the site could not be read. The arithmetic above does not depend on the answer, and a reader can settle it in 2 seconds by looking at their own screen.

Distance changes a face more than the camera does

Perspective in a portrait is set by how far the lens sits from the face. The camera does not change it, and neither does the focal length. Take a feature 10 cm behind the plane of the nose. Its apparent size relative to the nose is D divided by D plus 0.10. D is the subject distance in metres.

Computed from similar triangles, 2026-09-04. The 10 cm nose-to-ear depth is an assumption stated here for the worked example, not a measured population figure. The shape of the curve holds at any depth you substitute.

Going from 0.4 m to 2.0 m raises that ratio by 19.05 percent. In a face, that is the difference between a nose reading large against small ears and a face that reads normally. It is most of what anyone means when they say a selfie looks off. No camera upgrade touches it. Working distance does, which is why it is measured and held in a session rather than left to chance. That is why the pixel budget in stage 03 matters. There are enough pixels to give away.

What no retrievable source specifies

Not documented anywhere retrievable

A minimum or maximum pixel dimension, or a maximum file size, for the profile photo itself. LinkedIn's help centre carries figures for this. It returns a robots exclusion to automated retrieval, so those figures could not be read and are not repeated here. Every secondary page found quoting them cites another secondary page rather than the original.

Not documented anywhere retrievable

Whether a profile photo can be rejected, and on what grounds. LinkedIn's Professional Community Policies are also robots-excluded from automated retrieval.

Not defined by anyone

What counts as professional. No platform or credentialing body found for this page publishes a definition. No industry-by-industry standard exists in any primary source checked. The advice is universal and the specification behind it is not written down.

Published guidance in the Austin market reflects that. The most specific found is the University of Texas College of Natural Sciences career guide:

"Choose one that is only of you, not a selfie, and is professional in nature."

That is sound advice given directly rather than by citation, because there is no specification to cite.

Getting a photo that survives the crop

Everything above is a constraint on the picture rather than on the camera. The mask is fixed, the working distance is fixed, and the file is rebuilt at 100 by 100 whatever you upload. What decides whether the result holds at that size is not equipment. It is the 3 things below, and every one of them is set by the person making the picture.

Light

Shaped to the face, not thrown at it

A key light placed for the face is what separates a subject from the background once the image is down to 100 pixels. Ambient light does whatever the room is doing, and at that size the difference reads as flatness before anyone forms a view of the person.

Distance

Set once and held

The table above is the entire argument. Perspective is fixed by subject distance, so the distance is measured and kept there across every frame rather than drifting shot to shot.

Someone watching the frame while it is made

Pose and expression are corrected in the room, and frames are reviewed on the studio monitor before the session ends. An Austin headshot session is built that way, so the selects are chosen with the photographer present rather than after the upload.
